“The Lord Jesus, as the true Son of God, was miraculously conceived in the womb of His mother Mary by the Holy Spirit, and he was born completed with the Father’s DNA-the divine nature from above.” Major Thomas

I have been a labor and delivery/postpartum nurse for 12 years.  It never grows old seeing a new life come into to the world. To see it take its’ first breath and transition from life inside the womb to the outside world.  During this holiday season,we are reminded of the birth of Jesus but it is also a picture of our new birth.

Born Again, Anew, from Above

“Truly, truly I say to you unless one is born again, born from above, born anew they cannot see the kingdom of God” John 3:3

Some of the words used to translate this verse are born again, anew and born from above. I like the use of all three because it gives fuller meaning to the miracle that’s taking place when someone accepts Jesus. They are born again, anew, and from above.

Born Again-River of life

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and spirit he will not enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:5

Physical birth is a picture of the spiritual birth through the Spirit. A lot of airplay is given to baptism as a watery grave but it is also a watery birth. Baptism through water is a physical picture of a reality in the spirit. Human babies are surrounded by fluid for nine months. This fluid it not just ordinary water. This fluid has many functions, it cushions the baby from trauma, develops organs especially the lungs, and eases the birth process. The water we’re baptized in isn’t ordinary water. It’s a picture of the water we’re born from, the river of life, who is Christ. The Holy spirit merges with our spirit then we’re born out from the river of life. WOW!

Anew-Seeing and Entering

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh but that which is born of the spirit is spirit.” John 3:6

To be born anew is to be a new creation, a part of the new humanity. This new creation is not born of the first Adam,of the flesh, but from the new Adam, of spirit. It is an entirely new creation. This new creation is heavenly, eternal, complete with all the human and divine DNA to become a full grown son. To be born anew implies capacities that the first Adam couldn’t possess which was to see and enter into the kingdom of God.

“The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.” Luke 17:20-21

Jesus was calling himself the KINGDOM OF GOD. Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees who had no capacity to see who was right in front of them, THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  Jesus Christ being the Kingdom of God takes on a fuller meaning in light of John 3:3 and 3:5. So it’s important that we are born again, why?

The only way a human baby can see and enter into the world outside the womb is to be born. In the same way for the new humanity, in order to enter into and see the kingdom of God, we need to be born anew.  To say it another way, replacing kingdom of God with Christ-You must be born anew in order to enter into Christ and see Christ.

Born from Above-It Takes Two

In humans, it takes 23 chromosomes from a male and female to make a child. They are both giving a portion of themselves to make a completely new life.  It was the same for Jesus, it took human nature from Mary and divine nature of God, through the Holy spirit, to make a new humanity. The conception and birth of a human child are only a picture of our real, true birth in Christ. One born from above is conceived with the DNA of divine seed and human seed to bring into being a New Life, both giving a portion of themselves to make a completely new life.

Do you realize that Jesus Christ is born again into redeemed humanity, on earth for everyone to see, every time a person is born from above? That is the true miracle of birth. may we, this season, see and enter into the significance of our new birth-Christ and his visible expression on the earth through a new redeemed humanity.

  1. Wow! is right Carrie! There’s so much awesomeness in this description of our birth into Christ. Having a new little baby grandson also really brought what you’re saying, even more alive. Thank you for this great reminder of this miracle of spiritual birth that we’ve been given.
